BPI Welcomes The New Secretary of the State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport

Yesterday (Wednesday) Nicky Morgan, Chair of House of Commons Treasury Committee, was appointed Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, by the new prime minister Boris Johnson. The BPI’s Geoff Taylor has responded to Morgan’s new appointment by welcoming the MP’s understanding of British music and the importance of guaranteeing there is access to music in state schools. Geoff Taylor, chief executive, BPI says: ‘Many congratulations to the Rt Hon Nicky Morgan MP on her appointment as the new Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. As chair of the Treasury Select Committee she has demonstrated her commitment to British music, taking time to meet with us and discuss our policy interests.

Wealthiest children three times more likely to take music classes, research reveals

A recent report from the Social Mobility Commission reveals ‘huge disparities’ in participation across the arts. Conducted by researchers at the University of Bath, data was collected from over 100 young people and parents across England, and revealed the unfair advantages that are presented to children from more privileged backgrounds. The research demonstrated that young people aged 10 to 15, from wealthier households are much more likely to take part in music, drama and dance. Showing how only 4% of British Pakistani youth were taking music classes, compared to 20% of White British youth.

Bayreuther Festspiele 2019 beginnen

Die 108. Bayreuther Festspiele 2019 werden mit der Neuinszenierung von Richard Wagners Tannhäuser in der Regie von Tobias Kratzer heute eröffnet. Erstmals steht Valery Gergiev, Chefdirigent der Münchner Philharmoniker, bei den Festspielen am Pult, Stephen Gould singt die Titelpartie. Die Sängerin der Elisabeth ist die junge Norwegerin Lise Davidsen, die in dieser Rolle ihr Bayreuth-Debüt gibt, Elena Zhidkova ist als Venus zu erleben und war bereits 2001 und in den Folgejahren im Ring zu erleben. Aus den Vorjahren stehen Lohengrin (Regie: Yuval Sharon; musikalische Leitung: Christian Thielemann), Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (Regie: Barrie Kosky; musikalische Leitung: Philippe Jordan) und Parsifal (Regie: Uwe Eric Laufenberg; musikalische Leitung: Semyon Bychkov auf dem Programm.

Bayreuther Festival 2019 begins today

The 108th Bayreuth Festival 2019 will be opened today with the new production of Richard Wagner’s Tannhäuser, directed by Tobias Kratzer. For the first time, Valery Gergiev, chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic, will be at the podium at the festival, Stephen Gould will sing the title role. The singer of Elisabeth is the young NorwegianLise Davidsen, who gives her Bayreuth debut in this role, Elena Zhidkova is to experience as Venus and was in 2001 and the following years in the ring experience. From previous years Lohengrin (director: Yuval Sharon, conductor: Christian Thielemann), The Mastersingers of Nuremberg (director: Barrie Kosky, conductor: Philippe Jordan) and Parsifal (director: Uwe Eric Laufenberg, conductor: Semyon Bychkov at the Program.
