I’ve seen some stinkers in my time – including the infamous Brokeback Mountain staging in Munich several years ago, which transformed Lensky and Onegin into cowboy lovers and the grand ball in St Petersburg into a nightclub dance routine done by all-male chorus line in big hats, boots, and little else.
