Bach Mirror ist ein schillernder Beweis dafür, dass die Musik von Johann Sebastian Bach auch heute noch neue Generationen von Künstlern inspiriert – und zwar lange nach dem Ende des barocken Zeitalter, der Cembalos und der Orgeln, für die seine Musik ursprünglich komponiert wurde.
Obwohl die Musik von Bach allgegenwärtig und obsessiv im Mittelpunkt steht, wird sie dennoch bei diesem Album mit völliger Freiheit in jedem der dreizehn Stücke angegangen. Enhco und Serafimova leiten aus einem Motiv, einer Harmonie, einer Stimmung neue Kreationen ab, bei denen der warme und runde Klang der Marimba und den kristallinen Klang des Klaviers aufeinandertreffen.
Weit entfernt von einer gewöhnlichen Hommage, führt die unbefangene Haltung der Musiker zueinander und zu Bachs Kompositionen zu einem Ausbruch aus allen Schubladen und lässt in Bach Mirror eine neue, authentische und originelle Musik entstehen.
Die bemerkenswerte Percussion- und Marimba-Spielerin Vassilena Serafimova wurde 1985 in Bulgarien geboren. Thomas Enhco kam drei Jahre später in Frankreich zur Welt; mittlerweile ist er ein Jazzpianist auf der Suche nach Freiheit. Beide wurden seit ihrer Kindheit musikalisch erzogen – Serafimovas Eltern waren Schlagzeuger und Arrangeur, die von Enhco klassische Musiker (bevor seine Mutter eine zweite Ehe mit Didier Lockwood, dem berühmten Jazz-Geiger, einging).
Beide experimentieren gerne mit Musik in ihrer ganzen Bandbreite: formal oder populär, notiert oder improvisiert. 2016 haben sie ihr erstes Album als Duo, Funambules, über das Label Deutsche Grammophon veröffentlicht. Dort trafen ihre Interpretationen von Mozart und Saint-Saëns auf eigene Kompositionen; so haben die beiden Künstler es geschafft, Jahrhunderte der Musik mit Phantasie zu vereinen, und sich dabei selbst treu zu bleiben. 2017 gewannen sie den zweiten Preis bei der Osaka International Chamber Music Competition in Japan. Drei Jahre später stärkt Bach Mirror ihre blühende Zusammenarbeit.

Pianist Thomas Enhco and marimba player Vassilena Serafimova surprise once again with unique compositions on piano and marimba. Bach Mirror is their second album together and will be released today by Sony Classical. We are happy to support this outstanding duo for this release in Germany!
Bach Mirror is dazzling proof that the music of Johann Sebastian Bach continues to inspire new generations of artists today – long after the end of the Baroque era with its harpsichords and organs, for which his music was originally composed.
Although Bach’s music is omnipresent, this album approaches it with complete freedom in each of the thirteen pieces. Enhco and Serafimova derive new creations from a motif, a harmony or a mood, where the warm and round sound of the marimba meets the crystalline acoustics of the piano.
Far from a simple homage, the musicians’ unbiased attitude to each other and to Bach’s compositions leads to a breakout from pre-given stereotypes and makes place for a new, authentic and original music style.
A remarkable percussion and marimba player, Vassilena Serafimova was born in Bulgaria in 1985. Thomas Enhco was born in France three years later, a jazz pianist looking for freedom. Both were surrounded by music from their earliest age, having been raised by musician parents (percussion players and arrangers for her, classical musicians for him – before his mother remarried with Didier Lockwood, the famous jazz violinist).
Each experimented with music in its full extent: formal and popular, written and improvised. In 2016, they released their first album as a duo, Funambules via the Deutsche Grammophon label, where their takes on Mozart and Saint-Saëns met the duo’s own compositions, reconciling centuries of music, fidelity and invention. In 2017, they won the Second Prize at the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition in Japan. Three years later, Bach Mirror strengthens their thriving alchemy.
