WildKat Recommends: Anna Read

Monday 24th August 2020

We here at WildKat will be recommending 5 items that we have found inspiring, educational or enjoyable recently. Every Monday, a member of WildKat will recommend an Album, a Livestream or Concert, and three other items that mean something to them. We will also be including links to everything in their descriptions below. Be sure to check back each week as we will be sharing a new list of recommendations!

This week, we have PR Manager Anna Read sharing her recommendations!

Album

Karen Dalton – ‘In My Own Time’

‘When I first discovered the 1960’s singer Karen Dalton a few years ago I was struck by her talent. Known as folk’s equivalent to Billie Holiday, her haunting, distinctive voice evokes bluesy sorrow and her music is memorable. Listen to ‘Something On Your Mind’, ‘Katie Cruel’ and ‘Are You Leaving for The Country’. I’m always surprised more people don’t listen to Karen Dalton – she’s so compelling.’

Concert/Livestream

‘Dust’ by Akram Khan with English National Ballet

‘During the lockdown, contemporary ballet quickly became one of my favourite things to livestream. Akram Khan’s ‘Dust’ with English National Ballet stood out for me: A one-act ballet exploring life in the trenches and the role of women in World War 1. The dancers were put to work alongside Jocelyn Pook’s beautiful score, which included an eerie recording of a WW1 soldier singing ‘we’re here because we’re here’ to the music of ‘Auld Lang Syne’. So haunting.’

Poem

‘Won’t You Celebrate With Me’ by Lucille Clifton

‘US Poet Lucille Clifton’s work explored the African American experience, womanhood and resilience. I recently came across her poem ‘Won’t You Celebrate With Me’ and was so moved by it. She invites the reader to celebrate her struggle through survival; how she made her way in life from starshine and clay.’

Activity

Hathersage Outdoor Pool – Peak District

‘Night Swimming at Hathersage Outdoor Pool in the Peak District is so popular that you have to book tickets at 6am to secure an evening slot. But the early rise is worth it; by 9pm you’ll be immersed in aquatic splendour in the gloaming. So peaceful and recharging to swim with the hills of the peaks lit orange by the sunset.’

Eating Out

The Blind Bull – Little Hucklow

‘This week, we went out for dinner as part of the ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme. We wanted to go somewhere we’d never been before, and chose The Blind Bull, a charming 12th century inn nestled in a village called Little Hucklow. They were so friendly and welcoming, and the food was delicious – the menu was entirely vegetarian (it was ‘Meat Free Monday’) and I had artichoke, white bean and tomato stew followed by a dreamy orange drizzle cake. If you happen to be in the Peaks anytime soon, do give the Blind Bull a visit.’
